Mukonza & Selah / Name Our Building

Mukonza & Selah

By Dawn Brown

Our kids are so blessed to have donors like you, who care about them enough to give your own finances so that they can learn about our Lord, go to school, feel loved and valued by God and His people, enjoy good times with others and have food in their bellies.

Mukonza is one of the women who are blessed by Child Arise.  She was the 5th wife of her husband, who died of old age.  Her son also became sick and died.  With the loving attention and encouragement from Elizabeth Mativo, eventually Mukonza attended one of our Child Arise gatherings for widowed women.

Mukonza wasn’t a believer when she came the first time, but it was the love she could feel from the others that kept drawing her back.  In time, after much prayer and teaching, Mukonza asked Jesus to forgive her and trusted Him as her Lord and Savior!

As Mukonza grew in her faith and was attending our events, including when the widowed women and orphaned children meet together, she began to feel the needs of the children and has now taken in 5 orphaned kids.

One of those kids is Selah Muendo.  Selah was the second born of 5 children in her birth family.  Her father died from drinking the illegal alcohol, so many become addicted to.  It isn’t fit for human consumption, and even though they know it’s deadly, many make this choice.  After a while, her mother traveled to the far off city of Nairobi, to try to provide for herself and her children.  She never returned.

Mukonza, Selah and the other children in her care are committed to their attendance at Child Arise Bible lessons and prayer time.  Selah is one of our high school students and began being sponsored by Child Arise in school about 2 years ago.  Mukonza is very helpful to Elizabeth, especially cooking and serving for the children at the Child Arise meal and Bible lesson times.

Name Our Building

by Dawn Brown

Our Child Arise Spiritual Growth & Feeding Center needs you in so many ways.  Because of the skyrocketing inflation in Kenya, we felt it best to begin the building of our facility before we had all the funds raised.  We definitely need additional donations so that construction does not come to a halt!  Praise God with us that we held our prayer and ground breaking ceremony in August!

Another way we need your help, is with a name for our new site.  As you read this article, put your creative juices in action and send us your suggestions for a name!  We are hoping and praying that the building will be named with something that brings honor and glory to our Lord and might include a description of what will be happening inside.

In addition to housing the government required office space, this will be a place where the women and children can meet with a roof over their heads, to pray, share a meal and have a Bible lesson.   Currently, this takes place in our missionary, Elizabeth Mativo’s yard.

Quite a few problems have arisen over the years.  The biggest being the weather.  Elizabeth and others work very hard and long, cooking a meal for the kids.  They can have rain, wind or blazing sun on any day.  We have upwards of 200 high energy, hungry kids who are a bit difficult to control in a big open area when teaching a Bible lesson.  There’s also the personal safety of Elizabeth, with all of attention being drawn to her home.

Prayer Requests

We pray for the Child Arise children who will be sitting for their national exams at the end of October, so that they can have exams peacefully, without interference of elections, and also for God to give them a peace of mind at this time.

The children of Kenya have had a hard school year because of the political turmoil of Kenya.  They held presidential elections in August and the schools were closed for a week.  Their Supreme Court nullified that election and re-elections were held in October.  There’s been quite a lot of violence leading up to both elections.  The schools are now closed until the end of the year.   Elizabeth Mativo asks for your prayers as the schools have never been closed this long.  There is apprehension that without school, the kids will turn to drinking or other objectionable activity.
